Cincinnati Warnings and Dangers
Cincinnati sits on the Ohio River and is the third largest city in Ohio. While Cincinnati is mostly safe, there are areas to avoid while you’re there.
As long as you don’t wander off the main streets of Cincinnati, you and your family should be fine. If you’re downtown, stay close to your hotel and on the main streets, especially if you’re not familiar with the area in which you’re staying. Cincinnati is welcoming to visitors, but certain side streets are dangerous, especially at night.
Flooding and Weather
Cincinnati residents experience a wide range of weather. The summers and winters can be harsh, so you should pack accordingly during these seasons. The Ohio River is also prone to flooding. If you’re in this region, pay attention to the weather before you leave for the city. While unlikely, you could be stranded in an unfamiliar city during a flood. In the spring and summer, thunderstorms are prevalent. Occasionally, hail and tornadoes will break out near the city. Make sure to look at the forecast before you leave for the city. Always ask the locals where the nearest shelter is in the case of a tornado or severe thunderstorm.
Drugs, Theft, and Driving
As in any large city, illegal drugs can be an issue. Don’t take any chances. If someone approaches you with drugs, tell the authorities. Or, if you find yourself in a shady area, be alert. Thieves may try to pickpocket you in congested areas, and while rare, tourists have been mugged in the parks and less populated areas of the metro. Keep your belongings close and don’t venture off into unknown neighborhoods.
When driving into the city, take your time. Rush hour traffic is brutal, so bring your patience. If you can afford it, take a cab. The locals are experts at navigating the city and they can tell you where to go and where not to while you’re there. Parking downtown is limited, so ask around for parking garages and lots that are easily accessible to the public. As you would with your wallet, make sure your car is locked and secure. Break-ins are rare, but don’t make it easy for those who want to do harm to you and your property.
