Beijing has a temperate climate, meaning you may want to leave your swimsuit at home if you’re going in January of February (but take it with you if you’re going in July or August.) Temperatures can get pretty chilly, meaning you might need thermal underwear, thick socks, boots, and scarves during the winter. Spring and fall bring a wide variety of temperatures, so you’ll want to do some research or pack for practically any contingency.

It’s recommended that you bring a bag that can carry more than what you came to the city with, as well as a day back that can hold your stuff while you’re out. Beijing has some great bargains, and you likely won’t want to ship it all home. You might want to take basic toiletries and first-aid supplies as well. People suggest liquid eye drops due to the amount of pollution in the city, and Pepto-Bismol or Imodium in case you don’t react well to the food. Purell or wet napkins are also handy for those times where you need a little instant germ-killer.

You’ll definitely want to take a good camera (plus chargers, cables, and batteries) with you as Beijing has an infinite amount of fantastic places to photograph. Good walking shoes and a simple guide book will help you get access to even more incredible views. There are also good city maps you can buy, like from Lonely Planet, that are both easy to read and full of details to help you get around.

Public bathrooms may not be very diligent about replacing the paper (or may never have had it in the first place.) Carry tissues with you so you’re not caught unawares. Also, the sun tends to be brutal in the summertime, so take sun block or an umbrella to keep the harmful rays off your skin.
