The vendors can be pushy and extremely aggressive in drawing you into their store; they may try to earn your trust by claiming they recognize you, because they work part time at your hotel. They may try to pull you in with a basket of “free” earrings. Cozumel is full of fake jewelry, so be alert, and use credit cards instead of cash for extra protection.

Beware of Coral and the Undertow and Wear Sun block

When swimming at the beaches of Cozumel, beware of the coral beds. The coral is extremely sharp and can easily puncture your bare feet. In some locations, especially near lighthouses, the pounding surf is amazingly beautiful, but the rocks can be quite slippery, and the undertow is powerful and dangerous. The sun is strong and incredibly hot, so slather on as much sun block as possible, wear hats and stay out of the noonday sun.
