If you’ve flown in or out of a New York area airport in the last couple of years, you know that delays are a major issue. New York’s Kennedy Airport (JFK) is seeking to alleviate some of those delays, but ironically, it will mean more delays in the coming months. The project will also include a 120-day closure of the runway next year.

As the work got underway, Ben Mutzabaugh over at the Today in the Sky blog rounded up some choice quotes from officials. The Port Authority Director compares the project to “open heart surgery” on the airport. However, he also says, ” … we’re hopeful that the flying public really won’t see any significant impact at all.” Does he mean that passengers coming through JFK are so used to delays they won’t notice a little more inconvenience?

According to officials, the completed upgrades should reduce delays by about 10,500 a year. That sounds like a number worth waiting for. As long as we don’t have to wait too long.
