From a cold beer to a night out on the town, there are some great options when it comes to visiting Addis Ababa. Here are a few tips and destination ideas while you’re in town, where you can find some great nighttime options to take in.

The VIP Party Bus
If you’re not exactly sure where you want to go first, or if you are with a group of friends and you want to be able to drink while you head out to the club, consider booking a VIP party bus. It will be far less than what you’re use to paying back home, yet you can still have a blast without worrying about driving yourself. This is one of those modes of transportation where you don’t mind if the driver takes a wrong turn.
Ras Amba Hotel Balcony
There is a drop off right next to the hotel, which gives you an interesting panoramic view of the city below. At night time it can be almost an odd view as there are not as many lights down below as you’d think for the population. However, beyond this, it’s a great place for an inexpensive beer and the food on hand is delicious (and doesn’t break the bank). It’s a casual spot and well worth it if you’re in the area.
Watch Out For the Red Curtains
In different areas around town, you’ll essentially walk past shanty buildings constructed from discarded sheet metal. Some of these buildings will have a completely out of place red curtain. This is a symbol for a few things. One, there is probably a little drinking hole here (and it really is as close to a hole in the wall bar as you’ll ever find in the world). You’ll also probably be asked to connect with a girl (prostitute). Some guys may actually hang out in front of the door and ask if you want to go in to see a traditional dance. Generally these individuals, either outside or in, don’t mean you any harm. However, some of the girls on the other side are in the sex trade against their will. For others, the men outside take a large cut of the money paid to be with the girls. So beware if you see this happening.
The Dome Nightclub
This nightclub is directly connected to the Concorde hotel. If you stay in the hotel it is pretty easy to just wander down and see what is going on. You can even get into the club for free if you’re staying at the hotel, although you need to tell the bouncer this before entering.
