There’s no lack of promotions awarding bonus miles for doing this, buying that. But how often do you see promotions on the awards side of loyalty programs, offering free tickets or free room nights for fewer miles or points? Hardly ever.
So Alaska Airlines deserves special mention for offering discounted awards on a pretty regular basis. Presumably it helps reduce the mileage liability Alaska carries on its books, and does so during off-peak travel periods, when award travelers are less likely to displace revenue passengers. And for members of Alaska’s Mileage Plan program, it’s an opportunity to redeem fewer miles for an award trip. In other words, it’s a win-win.
The latest Alaska award discount applies for travel between January 7 and February 14.
For 15,000 miles round-trip or 7,500 miles one-way, Mileage Plan members can book award trips between many cities in California and Canada, Idaho, Oregon, or Washington. That’s a 5,000-mile discount over the normal round-trip coach award price and a 2,500-mile discount over the published one-way award price.
To get the discount, bookings must be made online at alaskaair.com.
