When American and Marriott announced, in May 2010, that they would be severing their loyalty-program ties later that summer, I called it a lose-lose-lose. Two good programs lost valuable partners. And the best interests of both companies’ customers were kicked to the curb.
Three years later, whatever issues drove a wedge between American and Marriott have apparently been resolved. AAdvantage members can once again earn miles for Marriott stays, and Marriott Rewards members can convert their points into AAdvantage miles.
Effective immediately, AAdvantage members can resume earning one to two miles per dollar spent on the room rate, depending on the brand, and two miles per dollar spent on all qualifying transactions.
Marriott Rewards points convert to AAdvantage miles at the following rates:
- 10,000 points = 2,000 miles
- 20,000 points = 5,000 miles
- 30,000 points = 10,000 miles
- 70,000 points = 25,000 miles
- 140,000 points = 50,000 miles
If the split was a lose-lose-lose, the reconciliation is a win-win-win.
And to make it an even bigger win, there’s a 500-mile bonus in store for AAdvantage members who complete a Marriott stay between July 15 and August 15.
