On Saturday, American, Delta, Northwest, and US Airways matched the fare increase introduced by United last week. Continental matched the fare hike on Friday. Fares on all five airlines will cost $4 to $50 more, depending on the cities and the length of route.
The fare increase, the fourth this month, was spurred by rising jet fuel prices, which have increased by 86 percent this year to a record high of $3.47 per gallon on Friday, reports Bloomberg News in a Washington Post article.
