Amritsar Shopping – Shops, Stores, Best Buys & Inside Tips

Amritsar Shopping

Amritsar is known for robustly colored fabrics, hand-crafted rugs, and artwork wholly unique to the local culture, which makes it a top destination for shopping. The experience of shopping in Amritsar is itself memorable; the marketplaces, the lanes, the bazaars, the squares, and the plazas all hum with activity.

What To Buy in Amritsar

The main attraction in Amritsar is woolens, carpets, and blankets, but the Amritsari juttis are sought-after throughout India. Jutti is a kind of footwear that goes well with most Indian traditional wear but can be matched with other common dresses, and even jeans. Amritsar is home to several famous shops that specialize in these traditional and versatile shoes. Raunak Punjabi Jutti at Hall Gate is a popular store in Amritsar, and is exclusively for the famous Amritsari Juttis that go well with traditional Indian/Punjabi dresses for functions and parties (although they also work just as well with casual clothes). The pricing is very reasonable, but you can still bargain a little.

For something different, 99 percent of the world’s wooden chess pieces are still made in Amritsar. Check out Focal Point (Industrial Area) and you’ll find many small houses that still make these prized chess sets. Try different styles like camel bone or artistic chess pieces, and pay around 50 to 3000 rupees depending on the size, handicraft, and wood you choose

Shopping Outside The Golden Temple

When visiting the world-famous Golden Temple, check out the shops outside of the main entrance for handmade art and crafts, clothing, and even knives, swords and shields which will raise a few eyebrows when going through customs.

If you are visiting the Golden Temple you will need to ensure that you cover your head, so stop at the street sellers outside the temple for exotically colored scarves at low prices. For only a few rupees you can get one for yourself and a whole bunch for your friends.

The Shopping Centers of Amritsar

The main shopping areas of Amritsar are the Hall Bazaar, Katra Jaimal Singh, and Lawrence Road, although shops can be found throughout the city.

The bazaars of Amritsar offer a colorful range of traditional and modern wares from carpets, dhurries, kites, fireworks, bangles, and shawls to cut-glass and woolen textiles. While some of these shops specialize in traditional goods, others sell mainstream modern fashions from around the world.

Each bazaar and marketplace has its own layout, but some are organized strategically to make it easy for shopping. At Guru Bazaar, near the Golden Temple, each lane sells a different commodity.
