Antalya Things to Do
Antalya is a large city along the southwestern coast of Turkey, and is the capital of its same-named province. Nestled at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, Antalya is a hotspot for tourists, offering many things to do.
Take a Stroll in Kaleici
Kaleici, or Old Antalya, is a wonderfully preserved area of town that takes you back on a journey through the past. Although the vast majority of the buildings have been renovated and restored, they still maintain classic architecture on the exterior. The streets are narrow and it is quite easy to get lost if you don’t know your way around, but that is half the fun of exploring this older part of the city. You’ll find inexpensive lodging at pension houses, shopping, dining and nightlife in this part of town, so don’t miss it!
Admire Beautiful Waterfalls
There are many rivers and streams throughout the Antalya region, and many of them culminate in spectacular waterfalls. A short drive gives you easy access to a number of waterfalls. Some right along the coast, pour into the ocean, and others further inland, create their own pools. Some of the most well-known of these waterfalls include, Duden, Kursunlu and Alexander.
Do Some Sightseeing
Although the locals don’t really like to talk about it, the original city of Antalya was actually built by the Greeks, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see classic Greek architecture and aqueducts, the engineering marvels that the Greeks are so well-known for. You can see some of these aqueducts at the Aspendos amphitheater ruins just outside of Antalya. Also nearby are the ancient ruins of Perge, where you can find the ruins of a Roman bathhouse and an agora, in which social and political business where conducted. If you prefer to remain within the city itself, Hadrian’s Gate is located right in the center of Antalya, and is stunning to see up close.
Visit the Seaside
Antalya is right along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Lara Beach offers a long stretch of sand, and you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the nearby mountains from your spot on the beach. The Antalya Harbor is another area that is immensely popular among tourists. Take a stroll through the harbor to enjoy the seaside air and watch the ships, both small and large, come and go. You’ll see cruise ships, private yachts, and commercial vessels just about every day in this bustling harbor.
Antalya is warm in the summer, and mildly cool, but not especially cold, in the winter, making it a great travel destination at just about any time of the year.
