A fresh breeze sweeps through the streets of Amsterdam as we look back on a weekend getaway in this wonderful city. The brown and yellow colours of the falling leafs provide an excellent scenery on this autumn day, where the sun seem to be inviting the transition to the winter days. Living in the east side of town, making use of one of the short stay apartment properties in the Old South district proves just how many amazing aspects Amsterdam offers and why I love bringing friends here.
We’ve started with an hilarious improvisational U.S. comedy show at the Boom Chicago theatre. Greg Shapiro and his friends manage to make even the stiff Dutch people laugh, in my opinion an achievement worth mentioning. On Sunday we were lucky enough to be part of a typical piece of national culture: the city’s welcoming of the Dutch Santa Claus: Sinterklaas. Accompanied by thousands of kids we waved as the steamboat of the Saint made its way through the Amstel river.
The Old South area has lots of other stuff to discover as well: the Albert Cuyp street market is great for just walking around and tasting different things from all over the world, and with its many impressive houses and parks, a stroll through this neighbourhood is a real treat. The many establishments where you can eat are numerous, so you’ll definitely enjoy this amazing part of town. If you want to get a good breakfast, head over to Omelegg at the Ferdinand Bolstraat street. Great omelettes, amazing juices, and some jazz music in the background: I don’t think I’ve started my sunday morning that well in a while. All in all we look back at a little holiday that is absolutely perfect if you want to have a little city break in a truly fantastic place on earth.
