Warnings and Dangers in Miami Beach: Bad Neighborhoods
Miami is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the United States. Its diversity and acceptance of different cultures and lifestyles are second to none, but there are still some areas in the city travelers should avoid.
Liberty City
Liberty City is considered by many to be the most dangerous part of Miami. There is some data to back this up, but it is still generally safe as long as you are careful. Don’t make yourself a target by carrying around a map or seeming like you don’t know what you are doing. Use common sense, basically. There are some particular places in Liberty City to avoid, specifically the flea market, with reports of robbery and theft in that area against tourists.
Miami Beach is Much Improved
Miami Beach used to be one of the more dangerous areas in the city. This has changed greatly in recent years. Thanks to high-rise condo and apartment developments and its new and improved economy, the beach is now safer than it has ever been. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be careful, though. If you want to remain as safe as possible while visiting Miami Beach, pay attention to your surroundings, don’t be flashy, and don’t go out alone at night or if you are intoxicated. Predators prey on the people they perceive as weak or easy targets. Women should especially be careful by not going out alone and only taking more populated streets at night, as there have been a few instances of crime against women recently.
Miami Beach is not the place for someone searching for a relaxing beach vacation. It is a much more lively and rambunctious scene than you probably want. It’s an ideal location for young twenty-something partiers. If you are looking for a serene getaway, look somewhere else.
Bayside Harbor
The harbor is a very popular tourist attraction. People love to rent boats or just relax and take in the sights. Beware, though, because there is the potential to get robbed by a pickpocket. Tourists are easy targets and stick out like sore thumbs, so try to blend in as much as possible.
Be Wary of Thieves
Personal items like your purse, bag, wallet, or phone could be stolen while you are out at the beach. There are some neighborhoods in Miami where it is easy for your stuff to be stolen. There are some simple ways to avoid this. The most important thing is to never leave anything important unattended. You may also want to keep valuable items locked up in your hotel room when you are not there. There have been instances of people being robbed in their hotel rooms while they are out during the day. The chances that you will be a crime victim are low, but it could happen.
