Airline to Perfume Its Aircraft Cabins

In what is being characterized as a move to make air travel appealing to all the senses, Iberia is introducing a custom-designed scent into its aircraft cabins.

The aroma, dubbed Mediterraneo, has three layers, according to a report by Skift: “Top notes of lemon, Bergamot, and citrus blossoms are followed by a floral heart of rose, iris, and jasmine, and undertones of white musk, vanilla, and sandalwood. It is a fragrance built on fresh aromas, soft and delicate which are also selected to generate a restful experience for passengers.”

The scent will also be deployed in the airline’s airport lounges.

In an era when it’s considered politically incorrect in some circles to wear perfume at all (in deference to those who might be allergic to or offended by the scent), Iberia’s move hovers uncomfortably between gutsy and foolhardy.

On the other hand, anything that might ameliorate the discomfort of flying, especially in coach, is worth a try.

In the end, customer feedback will determine whether scenting the cabin makes sense or not. My bet: It will turn out to be an intriguing failure.
