Cambridge is a city centered around the famed University of Cambridge. With its prestigious reputation and extensive history, there are many things to do and attractions to see while in the area.
King’s College was founded in 1441 by Henry VI and was one of the first colleges in the world to admit women. The College Chapel is one of the most iconic buildings in the world, and is a great example of late Gothic architecture. The building took over 100 years to build over the course of three construction stages.
The Great Gate of Trinity College began construction in 1490. It is the entrance to King’s Hall and was completed in 1535. It is the largest of all the college gates. The Great Gate is also home to the famous statue of founder Henry VIII, whose scepter was replaced by a chair leg in the 19th century. The tourist porter at the Great Gate is available to let visitors know which parts of the College are open.
King’s College Chapel was built over 70 years through funding provided by the various kings of England. Visitors will appreciate its stunning stained glass and ornately carved pews. You can also walk around the grounds, which are immaculately kept throughout the year.
The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences is run by the University of Cambridge and has one of the largest fossil collections in the world. The main portion of the exhibition is dedicated to the geologic history of our planet and contains fossils from every period right up to the last ice age. The megalosaurus skull is one of very view complete skulls of this species and is well known beyond the borders of Cambridge.
The Folk Museum is Cambridge’s local museum and is located in a former inn. The exhibitions show the history of Cambridge with an emphasis on everyday life. As such, the exhibits focus around daily items such as clothes and toys. Yet another part of the exhibition is dedicated to the building’s long history.
