When the formerly adult-only Club Med Cancun Yucatan reopens on November 11, it will do so as a family destination resort, with a kids’ club and teen activities. It will maintain an adults-only dining area, and there will also be a private villa for luxury travelers.
As someone who isn’t a regular luxury traveler and doesn’t have kids, I think the most interesting addition is the new focus as a “discovery” resort. My impression of all-inclusive resorts has always been that most people go there and stay there for the duration of a vacation. But this concept builds in ways for guests to spend time exploring the surrounding area. In the Yucatan, exploration includes trips to archeological sites and cenotes (swimming holes). Only time will tell if this expanded approach helps Club Med attract travelers who want to get out and explore in addition to lounging on the beach.
