Cologne is a medieval city on Germany’s Rhine River. If you’re in town to shop, stop at Kaufhof, the designer stores in the city center, and the open-air market, Cologne Wilhelmsplatz.
In the southern part of Old Town, sits Kaufhof. If you’re looking for a traditional department store, similar to Macy’s in the New York or Marks and Spencer in London, head to Kaufhof. There you can find everything from underwear, perfume, and dresses to heavy winter coats, gloves, and boots. Near Hohe Strasse and Bayardsgasse in Altstadt Sud, Kaufhof is a must stop for vacation shoppers.
Cologne’s city center is lined with restaurants, bars, and plenty of shops to keep you busy. If you head downtown, get here early. The area can get rather crowded, especially on weekends and in the summer months. This is also the site of the Christmas Market. If you’re in town over the holidays, check it out.
In Nippes, the fifth district in the city, you can find Cologne Wilhelmsplatz. This is an open-air market, popular amongst locals and tourists. There you can find fresh vegetables and fruit, as well as crafts, artwork, flowers, and handmade goods. The prices are affordable and it’s a safe area to take the little ones. When in town, stop by the market and sample a fresh fruit juice.
