County Kerry Things to Do
Lovers of the great outdoors and road trips will thrill to visit County Kerry. Ireland’s National Folk Theater also calls this county home, mounting multiple productions annually.
Drives
Drive the Ring of Kerry for scenic views of the Kerry peninsula. If you don’t want to rent a car, there are bus tours, too. Drive in the same direction as the buses since the narrow roads don’t accomodate two lanes of traffic. One of the best view spots is called “Ladies View.”
Also, drive the Dingle peninsula road, but drive slowly to avoid wayward sheep that wander into the road. Stop for lunch at a pub in Dingle for a satisfying meal.
Explore Torc Waterfall. Drive to the Killarney National Park or take a bus tour. The 60 feet high waterfall is a very popular site in the national park described as teeming with tourists.
Entertainment
Catch a show of Ireland’s National Folk Theater. The “Siamsa Tire” company in Tralee blends traditional music and dance with mime theater. During summer, the company stages multiple productions.
Shopping
While every town has some shops, one of the best known, Kenmare, offers a market and colorful downtown shops. While there, visit the stone circle and Cromwell’s bridge.
The shopping in Listowel provides a bright view, too. It’s main street made the Irish Heritage List. Both towns provide quaint, traditional shops that help you find something unique to remind you of your trip to Ireland.
Historical Sites
St. Mary’s Cathedral tops the must see historical sites list in County Kerry. The Roman Catholic cathedral isn’t the only religious site to see. Also, visit the former Franciscan friary Muckross Abbey. You’ll also hear it called Muckross House. Formal tours are available.
Don’t miss County Kerry’s “historical” animal. Around 1984, a dolphin swam into Dingle Harbor and decided to make it his home. The locals dubbed him “Fungi” and people began visiting this porpoise with a purpose – to entertain naturally. Look for tributes to Fungi throughout Dingle. He’s even got a sculpture of himself in town now. You’ll be able to get photos of him because Fungi seems to like the attention and he swims around in the harbor in full view.
