Crete Island Transportation
Because Crete is the largest Greek island, the best way to get around it is to rent a car. There are also good bus lines, and boats to access other islands. There’s no need to stay on a luxury resort here: the island is perfect for exploring.
Car Rentals
Renting a car is easy as there are several companies to choose from and most roads are in good condition. Locals recommend renting your car online before arriving since last-minute prices at the airport are very high. Companies offer smaller model cars and good deals to encourage tourism, but be aware that highways are not numbered and signs often do not give much information–it’s easy to get lost, and gas is more expensive than it is in the States.
Buses
Buses are affordable and helpful if you aren’t in a rush. You’ll travel according to their schedule and will spend more time in transit, but you can avoid the worry and prices involved in taking care of a car.
Taxis
Taxis offer flexibility, but are more expensive than buses. Agree on a flat price before you get in the car so the driver doesn’t overcharge you. A taxi from the airport to your hotel is a good idea if you don’t have a rental car waiting for you.
