Although the Faroe Islands are a self-governing region of Denmark, they have a sort of Irish feel to them—extremely changeable weather, misty fog, and turf-covered roofs. This 18-island archipelago has a very distinct culture and history all its own, however.
The islanders have their own Faroese design culture, with artists making hand-knitted and hand-sewn sweaters, dresses, and other colorful items, all with a very distinct style. There’s also a thriving music scene that boasts free live concerts every weekday in the summer, unique Faroese chain dances, and many festivals.
In 2007, National Geographic looked at 111 island communities worldwide and voted the Faroe Islands the “most unspoiled.” Visit for clean air, 300 different species of birds, sailing, fishing, and much more.
