Daily Daydream: San Antonio Riverwalk

Just one story beneath the hustle and bustle of San Antonio, the Riverwalk utilizes the banks of the San Antonio River to create a lively public park. Open year-round, the stone pathways that make up the Riverwalk feature boutique shops (planners for the area have made a point to encourage local businesses over mega-chains), restaurants, hotels, and museums.

Stroll alongside the San Antonio River on two parallel sidewalks that will eventually encompass 13 miles by the time the Riverwalk is completed. You’ll go under bridges and past historic Spanish Colonial missions and architecture. Tired of walking? Rent one of the city’s bikes through the Hubway cycle share program, or hop on a river taxi.

Feeling romantic? Don’t miss the islet in the middle of the river, known as Marriage Island. (Yes, you can tie the knot there, but you can take a pressure-free visit there as well.)

Where to stay? At the nearby Hotel Indigo, located along the Museum Reach section of the River Walk. Enjoy authentic Tex-Mex from the patio overlooking the river, or take a dip in the outdoor pool. The Hotel Indigo has its own river taxi stop, making it a breeze to get to.

What else should I know? The walled portion of the river is drained once a year in January, and the Riverwalk Mud Festival is held in celebration of the event. Come then to watch the Mud Parade, the Mud Pie Ball, and the Mud Queen and Mud King Competition. Or for less muddy fun, check out the other festivals that happen throughout the year, like the Murphy’s St. Patrick’s Day River and Festival, during which the river is dyed green.
