If you fly on either of the country’s two most hotly contested routes—between New York and Los Angeles or New York and San Francisco—consider yourself blessed. Unlike many routes that are dominated by one or two carriers, there are fully four airlines fighting tooth and nail for travelers’ business on the transcon routes.
American, Delta, JetBlue, and United all offer their cushiest domestic service on their transcon flights. And, recognizing the power of convenience, they offer plenty of plenty of flights as well, to accommodate everyone’s schedule.
In a bid to trump competitors’ schedules and their inflight products, Delta this week announced upcoming enhancements to its service on both routes.
Beginning in November, Delta’s New York-Los Angeles flight frequency will increase from nine- to 10-times daily. Six of the flights will be operated with single-aisle B757s with new interiors; four will be operated with widebody B767s.
And on the New York-San Francisco route, Delta will upgrade three of its eight daily flights to B767s.
The three associated airports have received their fair share of attention as well.
Delta’s Los Angeles airport facilities recently benefited from $229 million in upgrades. The airline’s Terminal 4 facilities at New York’s JFK airport have received $1.4 billion worth of enhancements over the past few years. And Delta will open a new Sky Club lounge at San Francisco airport later this summer.
Lookin’ good, Delta! But in a tit-for-tat business, it’s a safe bet that those three other transcon carriers are hatching plans to upgrade their services, and their airport facilities, as well.
Yes, it’s a good time to be a transcon traveler.
