Delta isn’t known for its frequent or outsized award discounts.
In fact, if Delta is known for anything award-related, it’s for being among the least generous when it comes to award availability. (For two consecutive years, Delta ranked last in IdeaWorks’ annual survey of award availability.)
This new discount for award flights to the Caribbean isn’t likely to have much effect on travelers’ perception of Delta’s award policies. But it’s a step in the right direction.
Through December 12, SkyMiles members can redeem fewer miles for award flights between New York and San Juan, Santiago, Santo Domingo, Port-au-Prince, Nassau, and Bermuda.
The price of economy-class Saver awards is reduced from 35,000 miles to 25,000 miles round-trip. Standard coach awards are reduced from 55,000 to 40,000 miles.
Saver business or first class awards are reduced from 60,000 to 50,000 miles. And the price of Standard business or first class falls from 100,000 to 80,000 miles.
Deal or No Deal
The discounts, especially for coach awards, are significant.
And the discounted travel window of almost two months is long enough to make the offer a viable one.
The promotion’s downside, of course, is that it only applies to flights originating or terminating in New York.
