Centrally located between the western slopes of Hualalai volcano and the ocean, the once sleepy fishing village of Kailua-Kona is now a hot spot for visitors to Hawaii's Big Island. The historic town makes an ideal home base for days spent golfing, snorkeling, and exploring. And a Kailua-Kona visit isn’t complete without tasting the local Kona coffee.
A Kailua-Kona visit is great any time of year. Hotel rates, however, are lowest in the fall after the summer crowds return home. Spring is another great time to visit Kailua-Kona to take advantage of better prices and fewer crowds. The busiest and most expensive time to go is between December and March, when visitors come to escape colder climates.
Pleasant is the perfect word to describe Kailua-Kona weather. Positioned on the leeward side of the Big Island, the town experiences sunny and dry weather year-round. An occasional afternoon shower is not unusual. Average year-round temperatures hover near the 80 degrees Fahrenheit. December and January are a smidge cooler.
