If you’re flying into the island of Kauai, you’ll likely be passing through Lihue, the location of Kauai’s main airport. Lihue is home to the pristine white-sand Kalapaki Beach (which regularly ranks high on lists of the world’s best beaches), historic Kilohana Estate (come for a luau show), and Koloa Rum (the island’s first legal rum distiller). Wailua Waterfall is just north of Lihue, and the Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve is only a quick drive away.
The most popular time to visit Lihue is December through March, but airfare and hotels will be marked up due to the increased demand. Visit Lihue in September or October and you’ll still have warm temperatures and not too much rain, along with lower prices and smaller crowds. Fortunately, temperatures are mild year-round, with average lows never dropping below the mid-60s Fahrenheit, so any month you pick should be warm.
