When To Go

With temperatures reaching over one hundred degrees in certain areas during the summer, Arizona can be a very hot destination. For those who love the heat, summer is an economical time to visit because hotels offer reduced prices. The spring and fall are comparatively temperate. In the south, winter can be warm during the day, but night temperatures can be surprisingly low. The north offers plenty of snowfall and skiing.

high season: December to May
low season: June to August
shoulder season: September to November

Weather Information

For pleasant weather, the best time to visit is in the temperate spring or fall. Summer can be extremely hot in the south, with highs in the triple digits during the day. However, the north enjoys pleasant summer weather with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The occasional thunderstorm or strong wind is common in July and August. In the south, winters are sunny and mild, with temperatures averaging 68 degrees in the afternoon. During this time, the north and east experience snow and colder temperatures.

Crowd Information

The dramatic rise in temperature means that with the exception of families on vacation, fewer people visit the Grand Canyon in the summer. Events that attract large numbers of people include the Tostito's Fiesta Bowl in January, P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in January, Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in February, and the Cactus League Spring Training in March.

Closure Information

Restaurants, hotels, and shops stay open year-round.

When to Save

The summer months are the most affordable in the southern part of the state.

When to Book

Book accommodations several months in advance when attending a festival or event.
