Costa Rica

When To Go

With consistently warm temperatures, Costa Rica is a year-round destination. However, the country has two distinct seasons: a dry season from December through April, and a wet "green" season from May through November. The dry season is the most popular time to visit, but the green season can be an ideal time to see lush vegetation and take advantage of lower prices. The holidays from December 25 through January 2, as well as the middle of July (due to school vacations), are considered the busiest peak times.

high season: December to April
low season: May to June, September to November
shoulder season: July to August

Weather Information

The high season occurs during the driest time of the year. During the low seasons, heavy rains accompanied by high humidity and warm temperatures are common, especially in September and October. Average annual temperatures range from 89 degrees on the coast to 62 degrees inland.

Crowd Information

High visitor traffic is caused by major annual events such as Holy Week, New Year's week, and spring break. The beaches can be busy during the first and second week of July, when the entire country's schools are on break and many locals take vacations.

Closure Information

Hotels, shops, and venues remain open year-round.

When to Save

The cheapest time to visit is during the low seasons, although deals can be found year-round. Hotels can be more expensive during the first and second week of July.

When to Book

Book one to two months in advance to ensure lodging. Tours can be booked within a few days of travel.
