The state receives 41 inches of rain annually, with the most falling in July and August. Winters bring cold temperatures and the chance of snow. Areas along the Atlantic Coast are generally 10 degrees warmer in the winter and 10 degrees cooler in the summer than inland areas. The spring and fall are temperate and mild.

Crowd Information

NASCAR weekends attract large crowds for one weekend in June and one weekend in September. The Friday after Thanksgiving, or Black Friday, and the week before Christmas are popular times for holiday visitors. Summers are also more crowded, especially at the beaches.

Closure Information

Most hotels, restaurants, and sites remain open year-round. Ocean-side motels may close for the winter. Attractions may reduce hours or shut down in the winter, but many extend their hours during the summer months.
