When To Go

Delaware has a temperate climate and can be an economical state to visit year-round. The summer is a popular time to visit, especially during NASCAR weekends. Spring and fall offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds. Winters can be chilly with fewer crowds, but visitor traffic picks up around the holidays.

Delaware experiences four moderate seasons, with an average daily temperature of 54 degrees. Summers are humid and warm, with temperatures averaging 74 degrees. The state receives 41 inches of rain annually, with the most falling in July and August. Winters bring cold temperatures and the chance of snow. Areas along the Atlantic Coast are generally 10 degrees warmer in the winter and 10 degrees cooler in the summer than inland areas. The spring and fall are temperate and mild.

Crowd Information

NASCAR weekends attract large crowds for one weekend in June and one weekend in September. The Friday after Thanksgiving, or Black Friday, and the week before Christmas are popular times for holiday visitors. Summers are also more crowded, especially at the beaches.

Closure Information

Most hotels, restaurants, and sites remain open year-round. Ocean-side motels may close for the winter. Attractions may reduce hours or shut down in the winter, but many extend their hours during the summer months.

Delaware is an economical state to visit year-round, especially since there's no sales tax on shopping, dining, or entertainment.

For those visiting during NASCAR, book at least one year in advance. There's no specific time to book for the rest of the year.
