North Dakota

When To Go

With its great plains, North Dakota is a driving destination where visitors can experience four seasons. The most popular time to visit is during the summer, when the weather is warm and there are many available attractions. Fall is a favorite among hunters and those viewing the foliage. Winters are cold and snowy, but are enjoyed by snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and ice fishermen. An ideal time to travel in North Dakota is during the spring and fall, when the weather is temperate and prices are reduced.

high season: June to September
low season: December to March
shoulder season: April to May, October to November

Weather Information

Summers are warm with low humidity and temperatures in the 80s. Precipitation varies throughout the state, and there are occasional thundershowers from April through September. Winters may bring heavy snowfall and temperatures averaging in the teens. Spring and fall offer moderate temperatures.

Crowd Information

Several major events including the North Dakota Fair in mid-July, the Mandan Rodeo Days from July 1 though 3, United Tribes International Pow Wow in early September, and Norsk Hostfest in mid-October attract large crowds.

Closure Information

Most hotels, restaurants, and sites remain open year-round. The Medora Musical is a seasonal event on stage from late May through early September. Many other outdoor recreational activities have seasonal hours of operation.

When to Save

Although North Dakota is an affordable destination throughout the year, prices are lower during shoulder and low seasons.
