Switzerland

When To Go

Switzerland experiences mild temperatures throughout the year, making nearly anytime ideal for exploring culture, history, food, or outdoor activities. The most popular time to visit is during the warm summer months. Although winter temperatures might drop just below freezing, most days are ideal for skiing or other snow sports.

high season: lateJune to September, December to February
low season: April to mid--June, October
shoulder season: March, November

Weather Information

Because of Switzerland's central European location, its climate is influenced by the four main European air currents from the Atlantic, the eastern continent, the northern sub polar region, and the Mediterranean south. Throughout the year, the climate is generally temperate with very little humidity, particularly on the central plateau. However, it varies considerably in other regions, often depending on altitude. From July through August, the average high temperature is 82 degrees, while the winter months of January and February reach an average high of 45 degrees. Although winter temperatures typically remain mild, they can fall just below freezing and snowfall may occur. Rain is common during the summer months, especially from July through August. Southern Switzerland has sub-tropical vegetation and enjoys a year-round mild climate.

Crowd Information

Summer vacation (July through the end of August) and holidays such as Easter and those in December tend to be crowded.

Closure Information

The off-season in mountain villages is from April through May and October through November. During this time, some hotels in these areas close.

When to Save

In general, prices vary by seasons. For example, hotels are the most expensive from July through August and in December. Mountain resorts offer lower prices from April through June and from October through November.

When to Book

To get the best deals on airfare, hotels, car rentals, and other travel services, it is generally best to book well in advance, particularly at hotels during Easter and the December holidays. There's no specific ideal amount of time in advance to book, but to ensure availability, sooner is better than later. However, special rates are often available at the last minute.
