Made from recycled fabrics in stylish cuts, Dudley Stephens’ fleeces have earned a prime spot in my suitcase for fall trips. I reviewed two of the brand’s popular tops, the Somerset Sweatshirt and the Valley V-Neck.

What is Dudley Stephens?

Dudley Stephens is a family-run, female-owned company that uses recycled materials to create ultra-cozy, fashionable clothing (you’ve probably spotted their unique tops on Instagram already). Both the Somerset Sweatshirt and Valley V-Neck are made from the brand’s Terry Fleece, a buttery-soft sweatshirt fabric that’s warm but still lightweight, making it perfect for packing. Dudley Stephens utilizes recycled materials to create this fabric, and the company has repurposed over 4 million plastic bottles in their clothing so far.

What Makes Dudley Stephens Different?

Unlike fast-fashion companies, Dudley Stephens aims to be a responsible brand. The company focuses on sustainability (by using recycled fabrics and tailoring production to prevent waste), female entrepreneurship, diversity, and philanthropy.

The clothes are different as well―they blend comfort with style, for a warm fleece that you can wear out of the house (or even to work). The fleeces are warm without being bulky, machine washable, and make the perfect layering piece for chilly flights.

How Does Dudley Stephens Measure Up?

Style: 10/10

Dudley Stephens’ tops come in a variety of styles and colors that work for every type of look, from casual to polished. The brand recently launched a new striped fleece fabric that adds even more flair.

Cost: 8/10

The fleece tops range from $98 for the Somerset Sweatshirt to $148 for the Taylor Tunic, which is a very reasonable price for sustainably made fleece. The tops are all machine washable and very durable (they won’t pill or fray like cheaper fleece), meaning they’ll last for a long time and definitely have a low cost per wear in the end.

Travel-Friendliness: 10/10

I highly recommend both the Somerset Sweatshirt and the Valley V-Neck for travel. They can both be easily pulled on and provide plenty of warmth in a cold airplane cabin, while still being comfortable enough to sleep in. At your destination, the tops look more presentable than a regular sweatshirt, so you can wear them out to dinner at night as well. Plus, the fabric is wrinkle-resistant and will never need to be ironed.
