A 6.6 magnitude earthquake, the largest in 23 years, struck Hawaii’s Big Island at 7:07 a.m. Sunday morning, causing power outages, landslides, damaging bridges, and startling visitors and residents. Aftershocks followed, reaching other islands as far as Lanai and with magnitudes as high as 5.8, sending visitors to darkened convenience stores in search of supplies. Several people suffered mild injuries, but no fatalities have been reported.
Although airports are fully functional, some flights have been cancelled. Several hotels have reported damage, so if you’re planning an upcoming Hawaiian vacation, be sure to check details with the property before you go.
