Warnings and Dangers in Chicago: The EL (Elevated Train)
Chicago is among the most heavily populated cities in the United States. Visitors should be aware of warning and dangers associated with the elevated train.
The Elevated Train
The EL train is a great way to get around, but please be careful at night, especially if you are alone. The stairways up to the platforms are very poorly lit and, in some areas, can be very dangerous for solo travelers. People sometimes report being followed, which is one more reason to travel with someone else as the city grows dark.
Know the Routes
Make sure you’re getting on the right train, because many different train routes all use the same tracks. You may think you’re getting on the orange line when, in fact, you’re getting on the green line. You may go multiple stops before realizing you’re on the wrong train and finding yourself in distant parts of town. Finding yourself in a strange part of Chicago isn not something you want to do, particularly if you are alone or if it is getting late into the evening. One final tip is to remember that some lines do not run on Sundays. You can end up sitting around at the station for a lengthy period of time if you’re not aware of the route’s schedule.
