Erie Things to Do
The quaint town of Erie, Pennsylvania is the perfect retreat for those who are looking for something low-key. Whether you’re visiting family in the area or taking the kids to the popular indoor water park, you’re sure to find a few different things that will be fun for all.
Nature
When the weather is nice, you’ll want to spend some time outside enjoying the natural surroundings. Presque Isle Park is free to the public. It offers a beach for swimming or building sand castles. You can bring along your own bike to ride on the trails or rent one for an affordable price. If boating’s more your thing, take advantage of the boat charters that will take you for a trip on the water. While there, visit the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, which has a number of free exhibits that teach about the environment.
History
History buffs are sure to love the Erie Maritime Museum. As a port town, Erie has a rich history when it comes to the open seas. At this museum, you can see a lot of memorabilia, including uniforms, model ships and the personal effects of sailors throughout the years. The highlight is a tour of a full-size replica of the USS Niagara, one of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s ships from the War of 1812.
The downtown Erie area also has a lot of areas of interest, including historical buildings like the library and St. Peter’s Cathedral. Check out the memorials found at Gridley Park too.
Kid Stuff
Erie is a great destination for families with kids. Splash Lagoon is always a big hit. It’s an indoor water park that also features an arcade, restaurants, and a ropes course. It connects with three different hotels, and you can usually get a great combo deal when you stay at one of those hotels. Most kids also like spending time at the Erie Zoo, where they can see penguins, giraffes, sloths, and kangaroos, among other animals. Note that the zoo closed in the winter, though, so plan your trip accordingly.
