Faro is the southernmost city in the country of Portugal. Like most coastal cities, it is a very popular destination for travelers looking for a beach vacation and the city also hosts a series of festivals and other things to do in the city of Faro.

Try the Regional Dessert

When in Faro, be sure to try the Doces de Amendoa which translates to “sweet almonds” in Portuguese. They are small cakes that are usually shaped into something interesting like a piece of fruit or an animal. They can be found in different shops all around the city.

Stork Watching

The beaches around Faro are a popular breeding ground for storks and many bird-watchers come from around the world to see them. The best time to see them is during their mating season which is at the end of May. You will evensee their nests in very unusual places like on top of lamp posts because they are protected by the law and their nests cannot be disturbed legally.

Igreja do Carmo

This morbid building is a smaller chapel built behind the main church and completely made out of bones. The walls are lined from top to bottom with skulls. The room is four by six meters in size. The graves of the skulls found. The bones are the exhumed remains of over 1200 monks from the area. The chapel is only open on the weekdays.

City Walls

The city is surrounded by walls built by the Moors to keep out the Romans. Today, the walls don’t surround the city in its entirety. They only surround what is considered to be “Old Town Faro”.

Relax at the Marina

For a great place to relax and check out the sights, go to the marina. Located just north of Old Town, you can watch the boats roll in and out all day. The marina is more active in the summer, so you might not see as much if you are visiting in January or February.
