Princess Cruises reports that a fire broke out in a passenger cabin on the Star Princess around 3 a.m. local time last night. The fire quickly spread to adjacent rooms, and though passengers were quickly summoned to their muster stations, one guest suffered a cardiac arrest and died, while 11 others experienced injuries due to smoke inhalation.
The Star Princess was en route from Grand Cayman to Montego Bay, Jamaica, when the fire broke out. The ship has reached Jamaica and is currently undergoing a damage assessment.
If you have family traveling on the Star Princess, you can call 800-693-7222 to request further information. The general public can check Princess’ website for updates. To see how badly damaged the ship is, you can see a photo on MSNBC.
