We found True Love (North Conway, NH)

My girlfriend, Amy, and I recently went on our first getaway alone with each other, and we stayed at the Kearsarge Inn in North Conway. After hours of research on the internet and talking to friends and family, I decided that we’d stay in the Penthouse suite with a jacuzzi and 2 fireplaces, and I have to admit, it was a great decision. The condition of the Inn was immaculate, the bed was heavenly, and we wouldn’t think twice about staying anywhere else for the price. I had considered staying at the Wentworth Inn, which seems to be very a elegant and romantic accommodation… but we were able to save nearly $100/night and were pleasantly surprised at this hidden gem.

Our ride in was a gorgeous way to kick off our weekend. We came in from the west, along the Kangamangus Highway, which provides several turnoff view points for great pictures and captivating scenic views along the mountainous road.

When we arrived at the Inn (which was very easy to find for someone who has never been to North Conway before) Lucy, the Innkeeper, couldn’t have been any sweeter and more accommodating to our expectations, and I feel that she truly saw how happy we were to be there together. Prior to our arrival, she assisted me in adding my personal touch to the weekend and assisted in making this weekend unique; I made a personalized card for Amy, which I sent to the Inn prior to our arrival, and she planted the card in the room for her to find. She also made sure that champagne flutes were readily available and had a bottle of Amy’s favorite champagne on ice for our arrival. The two of us were so comfortable in our penthouse, we nearly forgot to wander North Conway to see the sights and eat!

The location of the Inn was perfect. We were right in the middle of all the action, but set back enough off the main street, that we could enjoy our quiet time when we wanted it. For the warmer seasons, there’s a golf course right across the street, The North Conway Country Club, and Attitash Ski Resort is just a few miles down the road. Horsefeathers, a local and tourist’s favorite night spot is right around the corner for food and drinks, so no one has to worry about being a designated driver! There are plenty of local shops within walking distance as well, where one can find many unique artistry gifts or memorabilia to take with them.

The food was amazing! Upon our arrival, we went to Delany’s which provided excellent service, atmosphere, and food. I had an individual gourmet pizza while my girlfriend enjoyed a Reuben sandwich (her favorite, and it passed her test). After that, we grabbed some snacks, candles and dessert at the grocery store, and headed back to the suite for a romantic evening together, which included a very nice bath in our private Jacuzzi (honestly, it was clean but a little cramped for two, but we were able to cope).

The next morning, after a slow start to the day, we went to Peach’s for brunch. I noticed their sign on the way in (they serve breakfast all day), and the stuffed french toast is worth the trip! The waitress referred us to go to Diana’s Bath and Cathedral’s Ledge to make good use of the remaining daylight. Well, the road to the top of the ledge was closed for the winter, but Diana’s Bath was gorgeous. It’s a series of small waterfalls and pools that build up on top of the rocks which you can walk across. There’s a small swimming area to enjoy as well, but we’ll wait until the summer months for that. A very nice walk to take and perfect if you have a dog as well.

Later, we shopped at the outlets and got some Christmas shopping done, as well as a few things for ourselves. They even have a Lindt Chocolate outlet store, where we were able to find a nice parting gift for the staff at the Kearsarge as a subtle “Thank You” for treating us so well.

That night we ate at Bellini’s, which came highly recommended by friends, and they were right! My girlfriend salivated over the Lobster Ravioli, while I enjoyed the Saltimbocca dish. Both were amazing, the wine was perfect and the cheesecake desserts were delicious. We sat in the bar area, which I would recommend, as the dining room was full and seemed to be very loud, and we had exclusive service from the two friendly bartenders. After our satisfying meal, we lounged together, watched a holiday movie on the couch, and slept comfortably by one of the gas fireplaces, which is right kitty-cornered next to the foot of the bed.

The Inn gracefully allowed Amy and I to sleep in and take advantage of a late check-out. We then capped our mini-vacation off with brunch at the Red Jacket Hotel. This hotel sits high on a hill and the restaurant is on the top floor, so we enjoyed a gorgeous view and ate like kings at the buffet.

Overall, a very romantic weekend together, and the perfect way to spend the rest of tour Thanksgiving weekend together. Our ride back to Boston was so quick, that we were able to stop and have an appetizer with a friend in Portland, Maine. We’re definitely planning on doing it again in the dead of winter.
