Shopping in Gibraltar: Duty Free Goods
Whether you head to Gibraltar for the scenery, a business meeting, or its infamous rock, sometimes it makes sense to pick up a few items on the way home. If you’re looking for duty-free goods, check out these tips based on real shopping reviews.
Airports and Downtown
Some people will tell you that it’s a lot cheaper to shop at the airport than downtown when it comes to alcohol and cigarettes: “All dependent on brand, but significantly cheaper than in town.” You may find 200 cigarettes for around 8 pounds or a liter of whiskey for under 6 pounds. Gibraltar appears to be bargain heaven for many (especially if you’re buying tobacco), but others aren’t convinced that the prices are really any cheaper than in other European cities. Other goods you’ll find around town to buy are perfumes, sunglasses, and electronics, with varying prices depending on what is is and where you go. And just like anywhere, there will always be people in the regular shops who are trying to pull one over on you. Main Street in particular comes with a few warnings about their products.
Crystals, Books, and Souvenirs
If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, you’ll likely find it in and around town. Even if the prices may not blow you away, the selection is undeniable. For example, the crystals at Casemates Square are a unique gift to take home, as the factory where the items are made is close to the shop. These are made by local glassblowers, who fashion glassware, crystal and even jewelry in various shapes and colors. Or you can find books, clothes and edible treats around Main Street to either ship back or pack up. Shop for porcelain figurines or watches, as well as wines from all over the world. You’ll generally find prices in British pounds, and there may be a limit on how much you can take back home. While getting searched or challenged for how much you’re bringing in your suitcase may not happen, it’s best not to risk it.
The Joys of Shopping
You’ll be in good company here if you like to shop, so this is definitely a place to explore. Many people will come to Gibraltar from nearby areas (especially the U.K.) just to pick up cheaper goods than at home. Even backpackers or those with tight budgets may be surprised at what they can buy once they do a little math. For those who are always looking for a good way to save a few bucks, then it will be a fun excursion to start dissecting where to do. The economy is supported by their tax-free shopping centers, so at the very least, you should probably have window shopping on your agenda.
