Shopping in Greece is often a pleasure with many small shops and locally made goods.

Local Markets 

Nearly every town in Greece has a local market. Hours vary but most are open for a few hours each day. Many islands have fishermen who will bring part of their catch to the market to sell. Other typical products usually include many foodstuffs that compose the Greek diet. Look for honey, lemons, long sprigs of oregano, dried garlic, marinated lamb, salamis and thick holiday Easter breads that house a decorated egg. This is a good place to find the makings of a great lunch. Some markets, like the one in Chania, are held in a permanent building. Others may be held in a more informal place next to the ocean.

If you’re in Athens, the flea market here offers lots of items for sale ranging from clothing to shoes to small textiles. Bargaining is expected, so don’t hesitate.

Specialized Greek Products 

Many places in Greece specialize in a specific product. For example, Anogia on the island of Crete is the place to head to if you want to buy high-quality lace or embroidered shirts. If you like wood carving, head  for Metsovo in Epirus. Look for local museum gift shops. Many work with local artisans to sell their products. You might be able to find paintings, glass art, and other items that are not available anywhere else.

Alcoholic Beverages 

Greek alcoholic beverages include Ouzo and many local beers. Look for them at greatly reduced prices in many regional stores. Drink here or bring it home with you.
