Tourist Traps in Dublin: Guinness Brewery
To go or not to go? That is the question. Most reviewers suggest there is not much worthwhile to see or do when visiting the Guinness Brewery, but the following tips should help you make your own decision!
Don’t Go
Before visiting The Guinness Brewery, I read lots of fellow visitors’ opinions and reviews. Although I decided to check it out for myself, I have to say, for the most part, they were correct. Although there were a few interesting things to see, along with a “free” pint of guinness, there is nothing spectacular about this place. As you have undoubtedly read, it has not been a working brewery in a long time, therefore you do not get to see any real aspects of the brewing process. The commercials were my favorite part and the view from the Gravity Bar was really good, but it was extremely packed in the bar. I would never visit it again.
Decide for Yourself
Although it has its downsides, including the long line and expensive ticket, the lines can be skipped if you make an ONLINE reservation or buy the Dublin Pass.
I really loved the Guinness Brewery. The museum tour was a perfect blend of old and new, with its classic industrial brewery feel with modern interactive information about the process. A huge plus was that you received 2 free pints with the entry ticket. The Gravity Bar was awesome and had great views of the whole city of Dublin. It was a bit crowded, but still a fun atmosphere. They let you try to get “the perfect pour” for your own pint. They also had lots of great merchandise which I found worked out great as souvenirs for family and friends. This was a huge highlight during my trip to Dublin.
The Basics
The Brewery is 7 or 8 floors with the top floor being a bar. At the end of the tour you can receive one glass of Guinness either at the bar or the pouring level where they will teach you how to pour a glass. The entire tour is really interesting and you will learn a lot. I enjoyed how the demonstrations on how certain tools worked. They do have a really large gift shop and the worlds largest pint glass which can hold 14.3 million pints of Guinness.
