Homeland Security to require new driver's licenses by 2014

We’re all used to using our driver’s license as a form of ID at the airport. But if you were born after December 1, 1964, you’ll soon need a new Homeland Security-approved license to do so. Older drivers will have until 2017 to convert to the new license under the plan, reports USA Today.

The move comes in response to the official 9/11 Commission Report, which identified a lack of nationwide standards for identification as a key vulnerability.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says the new rules will make it more difficult for terrorists to slip past security while also reducing illegal immigration and identity theft. “This kind of identification gives us a tremendous tool in preventing dangerous people from getting on airplanes or getting into federal buildings,” Chertoff says.

The new licenses will include digital photographs and security features designed by Homeland Security.
