The heavily populated city of Ipoh has narrow streets and toll roads which make it a challenge if you choose to drive your own car. Most people prefer to take public transportation, especially taxis, buses and electric trains.
Getting Around by Bus and Train
The main bus center is located is located at Medan Gopeng which is about five kilometers from the center of the city. The buses there can take you to and from just about any location in the country. The most frequent routes are to and from Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Large major bus companies are more likely to have the safest and most reliable transportation. Make sure you plan your route in advance as some buses may not stop close enough to your destination. From there, you can either walk or arrange a ride in a taxi. An electric train service is available between Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh which may be a faster and more comfortable choice.
Traveling by Taxi
Locals like to get around by taxi and if you are traveling to an area in town where the buses won’t go, it may be your only option. There is a taxi stand at the main bus station and other places around town. It may be hard to call or find a cab in the suburbs late in the night. Be aware that not all taxis are metered and you must agree on a price before your trip. You may even have to haggle even after you reach your destination. Some taxi drivers try to take advantage of tourists, so know as much about what is commonly charged before traveling.
