Jitney Bus, Nassau – Transportation

Transportation in Nassau: Jitney Bus

For a convenient and inexpensive way to get around Nassau in the Bahamas, it’s hard to beat the local Jitney bus service. Jitneys cost a mere $1.00 each way, run frequently, and can take you all the way from one end of the island to the other.

Jitneys Are a Great Scenic Way to Scope Out the Island

The number 10 Jitney bus runs along West Bay street, the main thoroughfare that runs through Nassau. It will take you from the downtown area all the way to Gambier Village, which is on the west side of New Providence Island. Along the way you’ll pass many of the beautiful  beaches, palm trees, luxury homes and hotels that the island has to offer, including the entire Cable Beach resort area.

Allow for Extra Travel Time During Rush Hours

The numbers 10 and 10A Jitneys run along Bay Street, which can be very congested, especially during certain times of the day. If it’s rush hour and you’re time-crunched because you need to get to your destination at a specific time, give yourself an extra half-hour or 45 minutes of travel time.

Find an Alternative for After-Hours Transportation

Unfortunately, the Jitneys stop running during evening hours, facilitating the need for a taxi to get from one place to another. If you plan to be out past 6:00 p.m., make sure to bring along the number of a taxi service you can call when you’re ready to get a ride back to your hotel. Keep in mind, however, that taxis are a lot pricier than Jitneys ( in the neighborhood of $12 each way). In order to cut costs, you may be able to negotiate with the taxi driver or ride-share with other tourists.

There Are Designated Stops, But Jitneys Can be Flagged Down, Too

There doesn’t seem to be a set bus schedule, but luckily, the Jitneys stop approximately every 10 to 15 minutes at all of the stops along the island. Also, if you do see one about to pass you by, the drivers are usually very accommodating and will pick you up anywhere along the route if you flag them down. They don’t like to spend too much time at any of the stops, though, so be ready to hop on quickly once the driver pulls over.
