Because of its unique location, the Alaskan city of Juneau acts as a hub for any number of transportation options of the exceptionally scenic variety. Whether you want to take a ferry, a seaplane or even a team of dogs, Juneau has what you want.
Getting To and From Juneau
Although there are any number of exotic ways to arrive in Juneau, cars are not among them. There is no road to or from this coastal city. All passengers must arrive by float plane, boat or commercial aircraft. Cruise boats often dock there for a short visit before going out to see Mendenhall Glacier. Remember that the vast majority of towns in Alaska can only be reached by air, so the Juneau International Airport also functions as a gateway to the wilderness.
Everyday Juneau Transportation
Driving in Juneau is more difficult than most cities. There is a large car ferry that will bring your vehicle to town, or you can arrive by some other form of transportation and rent a car. However, you may be able to just fine without it. Even though the city only has 30,000 year round residents, there is is a functional municipal bus system to get you around. Taxis also present an excellent option to see the city, though it may be helpful to book them in advance if you are traveling on a cruise.
The municipal buses will take you out Glacier Highway to see all the unique sights out there, or you can hire one of the many private tour companies to drive you around. There are also any number of float planes and other aeronautical tours. These can be chartered for specific flights or taken as part of established tours.
