Warnings and Dangers in Kota Kinabalu
Known for its busy markets and noteworthy beaches, Kota Kinabalu is also home to Kinabalu National Park featuring impressive Mount Kinabalu. Although you are bound to enjoy your adventures, pay attention to a few warnings.
Bottled Water Only
Never drink tap water, even if the water is from the bathroom faucet in your hotel room. Tap water in Kota Kinabalu does not meet with acceptable purity standards. In addition, purchased water may consist of broken seals. Make sure you inspect the seals before making any purchases from a local store.
Swimming
The lifeguards at the five National Park islands overlooking Kota Kinabalu lack formal training and do not make use of technologically advanced equipment. Plus, they have poor attitudes and are liable to place more importance on their cell phone messages than focus on swimmers who may need help. The waters in this region seem calm but are often treacherous.
Fees and Charges
If you are the type of person who routinely asks the server for towelettes or other extras, do not become alarmed if a surcharge is added onto your bill. Do not assume that specific items are free. If in doubt, ask about prices.
