Kruger National Park Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

Kruger National Park Things to Do

Eager to experience the outdoors and its wildlife? Here are Kruger National Park things to do that you’ll love, and attractions and must-see sights you won’t want to miss.

Night Safari

Although you can see plenty of game in Kruger during the day, a night safari gives you an entirely different perspective of the park. You get to see some animals that are nocturnal, such as leopards and hyenas. Also, you get a sense for the sounds of the bush, since there are fewer vehicles out making noise in the park at night. Being able to see all of the stars in the sky far away from city lights was another huge perk. There are a few different night safaris that you can take in Kruger and nearby Sabi Sand (a large private game reserve next door to Kruger) and some can be booked through your hotel.

Tip: Make sure you wear warm clothing since the vehicle they take you in has open windows. They usually provide you with blankets but the forest can be quite chilly at night so it’s good to be prepared.

Walking Safari

If you enjoy hiking and walking, then a bush walk at Balule Game Reserve is just the thing. The safari is a nice walk in the reserve where you can get an up close glimpse of some of the animals roaming the reserve. As you prepare to start your walk your two guides will instruct you on the rules and will ask that you walk in a single file. The guides are also armed for your protection, with one guide leading and the other behind the last visitor. You’ll start out early in the morning for a little breakfast before piling into the jeep for the drive to the closest point where you can leave the jeep and start the walking tour. The walk, an easy 2-3 hour guided tour, takes you exploring in the reserve listening for any animals. Along the walk the guides point out interesting facts of the flora found in the reserve as well as tidbits of some of the animals. The Olifants River is a big highlight of this trek, with it’s wide view of the flowing river filled with hippos and crocodiles.

Tip: Bring binoculars for better views of animals in the distance.
