Kukup was a small fishing village that has become a popular weekend spot — all because of the seafood. This coastal town, located in Johor, Malaysia is famous for its open-air seafood restaurants built on stilts over the water. The nearby fish farm supplies much of the areas fresh seafood.
Car & Taxi
There will be taxis that are just cars (no meters) around town that you can take, but be prepared for it to be pricey. There are enough visitors to the town that parking is difficult, so it may be worth it for you to pay the fee, but just be warned and negotiate your fare before getting in the car. A good tip if you are trying to drive and park in Kukup is to choose a restaurant with its own parking, eat there, and they may let you leave your car there awhile.
You can get to Kukup by public transport, though it may be a bit of a stretch to find the lines and times of the busses and you might have to still take a taxi part way. Because of this, a bus tour with any of the local travel agencies is probably easier. A day trip to Kukup normally cost around S$60-$70 per person and it usually includes lunch, a tour to the mangrove island, a nearby durian/pineapple plantation, and other things along the way.
Being a fishing village, getting around by water near Kukup is as natural as driving, or more so. There are ferries that go to and from Singapore and Indonesia, as Kukup is a popular weekend getaway for visitors, especially Singapore. Depending on where you need to get to, a ferry might serve you quite well, and let you bypass the bumpy roads, traffic, parking, and highway tolls, while giving you a tour of the coastline and interesting experience along the way.
Also, while you’re in Kukup, take a trip to the floating fish farm, the source of the town’s plentiful and tasty seafood. There’s a separate charge on the boat ride if you choose to do a stop-over at the fish farm, but many visitors say it is all well worth it.
