Local Taxis, Casablanca – Transportation

Transportation in Casablanca Local Taxis

Casablanca has been a dreamy tourist destination since even before the 1942 movie of the same name. But as the largest city in Morocco, it is important to know how to navigate its streets and understand the local taxi system.

Petits Taxis vs. Grands Taxis

There are two main types of taxis in Morocco: petits and grands. Like their names suggest, petits taxis are smaller (Fiats, usually) and can hold only a couple of passengers while grands taxis are larger (often older Mercedes-Benz models), usually white in color and can hold bigger groups. In Casablanca, petits taxis are painted red and can only travel within city limits while grands have more freedom. That said, grands taxis are also more expensive.

Taxi Stops and Extra Passengers

While you can certainly hail a taxi at almost any point around the city, it is important to know that there are designated taxi stops where drivers of both petits taxis and grands taxis can pick up passengers. Don’t be surprised if a grands taxi you are in stops to pick up additional passengers along the way. Many of these in Casablanca operate more like buses and will not hesitate to pick up other customers if there is space, as long as they are going along the same general route.

Fix the Price Before You Go

Many taxis in Casablanca do not have meters, so it is wise to fix the price with the driver before you depart. Otherwise, you could end up paying a lot more than you planned! Additionally, it is a good idea to exchange your money upon entry to Morocco before attempting to use foreign currency.
