Hike Up

There’s a funicular that runs from the Kolonaki suburb at the bottom of the hill to the top, but those who want a true experience should hike up the side of Lycabettus Hill. The hike stretches from one side of the hill to the other, winding up to the top, affording visitors a fantastic view of the city. There are spots to rest on the hike, but no drinking fountains until you reach the top. As you climb, think about the legend that Athena dropped the hill as she tried to bring it to the Acropolis.

Church of St. George

Reach the top of Lycabettus Hill, catch your breath, and experience the sight of the city unfolding before you. The peak of the hill isn’t just a great photo opportunity but also features the Orthodox Church of St. George, a small chapel perched at the highest point of the city. While it was “only” built 200 years ago (practically no time at all in the long history of Greece), it looks like a medieval chapel from the outside as well as the inside. The chapel is small and the hilltop may be crowded depending on the day, so be prepared to wait to go in. A good time is at sundown: the crowds ease up and the sunset over Athens looks spectacular.
