Malmö Things to Do
The third largest city in Sweden, dynamic Malmö has years of history and a fun vibe. See the ancient medieval castle or watch the city from the canal.
Tour the Canals
This is a city of water. See the city from the water via a canal tour. Most tours run about an hour. You can also walk along the canal then sit down and have lunch at one of many steps along the shore. Look for the much-beloved cat sculptures.
See the city’s many parks. Kungsparken has an old windmill. Slottsparken or Old Castle Park has an herb garden. Pildammsparken is behind the opera house and has rose garden and a large pond. Come here during the summer for free concerts.
Head here during the summer to meet locals and dip your toes in the water. This is also the place to go during the winter for a view of the entire city and the brisk, cold air.
Malmöhus Castle and Museum
The oldest Renaissance castle in Sweden, it’s also home to four museums. Tour the castle and marvel at the moat and the thick defensive walls. There’s also a City Museum with the history of the area, a Natural History Museum that explores the landscape of the area, an aquarium and an art museum. Admission to the castle allows you access to all museums and a chance to tour the grounds.
Swedish for Little Square, this is the heart of the old part of the city. Created four hundred years ago as place to sell goods, Lilla Torg is a popular place for a spring lunch. Walk along the square and then see medieval buildings such as the Hedmanska Gardens that date from the late 1500’s. The house is open to the public and has a tranquil courtyard that is often the scene of many concerts during the summer. The half-timbered Faxeska House is another local landmark you can tour.
Øresund Bridge is one of the modern marvels of the engineering world. Consisting of five miles of bridge, tunnel and island, the bridge connects the city with nearby Copenhagen. Drive across this span or just watch it from the shore.
