Malta Things to Do
This archipelago, located between Sicily and the North African coast in the Mediterranean Sea, is a popular destination for Europeans, and is recently growing in popularity with Americans. Malta has many must-see attractions.
Spinola Bay
Spinola Bay is one of the main attractions of the tourist resort of St Julian’s. This picturesque bay is basked in sunshine during the day, with small, colorful fishing boats bobbing up and down in the gentle waters. Many tourists enjoy sitting at a bench in the morning sun and reading their newspapers.
By night, the lights of the numerous surrounding restaurants reflect on the water and the sight is quite spectacular. There are a number of up-market restaurants with dining terraces that overlook the bay. The food is probably good in these places, but the price will be inflated by the exclusive location.
Marsaxlokk Harbor
Marsaxlokk has one of the prettiest harbors in Malta with lots of bright fishing boats on the water and fishermen arranging their catches on the shore. There are a few nice bars and cafes as well as shops on the waterfront, and a great fish market on Sunday mornings and a farmer’s market on every other day. In the afternoons the fishermen can be seen untangling and mending their nets.
St. Paul’s Catacombs
St. Paul’s Catacombs are a wide labyrinth of corridors and tombs under the ground. Photography is allowed there, but only without a flash and tripod. Next to the entrance flashless photography will not be a problem and for the rest of the catacombs you will need a very good lens in order to be able to take photos. The first chambers lead to more and more catacombs located in different rooms, visitors need to be aware that one could really get lost within the catacombs if they are to explore without a map or a guide.
Valletta
Valletta is a historical site located on Mount Sceberras Peninsula which juts out into the sea. At the end of the peninsula lies St Elmo’s Fort. On one side of the peninsula is Marsamxett Harbor and on the other the Grand Harbor. The City of Valletta was founded in 1566 and its forts, bastions and cathedrals were completed within fifteen years.
